in Victorian times lesbianism was not illegal, but that was nothing to do with victoria - it just wasn't considered important and nobody could see a crime in it, especially as it isn't mentioned in the bible.
To the case in question:-
Sex with minors is statutory rape.
(The gap in the law concerning lesbians was closed years ago.)
Teachers having sex with their pupils under 18 is also a criminal offence.
She was found gulty on both counts.

As to why this woman was jailed, for a consensual act that was a first-time offence with no coercion - interesting question! not 1 in 1000 get sentenced to jail for that.
you would need to look very carefully at the family of the young girl and see if their extreme wealth and powerful friends might be connected to it.
The woman should have been sacked, placed on the sex offenders register and given a suspended sentence - she clearly crossed the wrong people...

First, a distinction should be drawn between BEING gay and BEHAVING gay. Being gay is a sexual orientation (a part of one's core identity, a matter of ontology) that doesn't change. You can be celibate and gay, and plenty of the gays and lesbians (and bis et al.) here know who they are but are still virgins. Same-sex sexual acts are behavior, and behavior is far more complicated. Since it's the behavior that's important from a public health (and personal health) standpoint, the designation for any same-sex sexual acts between men is "men who have sex with men" (MSM). This way, no one has to identify as having a certain orientation, precisely because often they don't have this orientation.

So what your prof said is partly true, at least if you're reporting it right. (It may be that he made the above distinction but you just don't remember.) What he's talking about is SITUATIONAL gayness.

In a prison, the "alpha males" will rape others to assert power, terrorize, and mentally/physically enslave (the real reason for all rape, which is why it's such a popular weapon of war). How does anyone expect a man to be capable of coming back into society, getting a job, and becoming a "productive member of society" when they're still recovering from the trauma of being raped?

We need to address this issue seriously instead of just letting it be the subject of a thousand jokes.

Of course, happens all the time. Doesn't mean you are gay/lesbian. We are attracted to people for all sorts of reasons. Teachers can be very desirable because they seem to know so much, they are confident, they are older, they seem to like you. But when you grow up, you change and your attention focuses on others more appropriate. Once you are out of the teacher's circle, you forget all about them. They will rarely remember you in 10 - 20 years.

Funny you should ask, as I watch Loving Annabelle. I think in high school there is an issue, because of age, and the ethical and moral standards that teachers are supposed to maintain. The position that teachers are in is a unique one. Their students look up to, and need to be able to trust them. There should be no unneeded bias.

I don't always think it is wrong, however. I believe in the case of college students and professors it is more acceptable, as long as the student is no longer in a class of the professor. :-) I can think of one professor I wouldn't mind having a lesbian relationship with (sigh).

Oh, on that note, I think it is just as bad for a same sex teacher/student relationship if not worse in the eyes of outsiders.
